Scripture

(John 10:1-6, NLT) “I tell you the truth, anyone who sneaks over the wall of a sheepfold, rather than going through the gate, must surely be a thief and a robber! 2 But the one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 After he has gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them, and they follow him because they know his voice. 5 They won’t follow a stranger; they will run from him because they don’t know his voice.” 6 Those who heard Jesus use this illustration didn’t understand what he meant…”

Observation

  • The thief is a robber and sneaks over the wall of the sheepfold.

  • The shepherd is the one who enters through the gate, unlike the thief.

  • The gatekeeper opens the gate to the shepherd.

  • The sheep recognize the voice of the shepherd and come to him when he calls.

  • The shepherd knows his sheep each by name. He leads them out of the sheepfold.

  • After the shepherd has gathered his flock, he leads them by going ahead of them, and they follow because they know his voice. This phrase is mentioned 3 different times.

  • They won’t follow a stranger because they don’t recognize his voice. People are confused by the metaphor.

Application

  • Time with the shepherd is essential to be able to recognize him and his voice.

  • We must be careful not to follow the wrong voice.

  • A leader goes before those he/she leads.

Prayer

Jesus, you are the good shepherd. As I spend time with you, help me to know and follow your voice. Protect me from the voice of the enemy. Lead and guide me in every step I take. In Jesus’ name, amen!
