Scripture
(John 10:1-6, NLT) “I tell you the truth, anyone who sneaks over the wall of a sheepfold, rather than going through the gate, must surely be a thief and a robber! 2 But the one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 After he has gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them, and they follow him because they know his voice. 5 They won’t follow a stranger; they will run from him because they don’t know his voice.” 6 Those who heard Jesus use this illustration didn’t understand what he meant…”
Observation
The thief is a robber and sneaks over the wall of the sheepfold.
The shepherd is the one who enters through the gate, unlike the thief.
The gatekeeper opens the gate to the shepherd.
The sheep recognize the voice of the shepherd and come to him when he calls.
The shepherd knows his sheep each by name. He leads them out of the sheepfold.
After the shepherd has gathered his flock, he leads them by going ahead of them, and they follow because they know his voice. This phrase is mentioned 3 different times.
They won’t follow a stranger because they don’t recognize his voice. People are confused by the metaphor.
Application
Time with the shepherd is essential to be able to recognize him and his voice.
We must be careful not to follow the wrong voice.
A leader goes before those he/she leads.
Prayer
Jesus, you are the good shepherd. As I spend time with you, help me to know and follow your voice. Protect me from the voice of the enemy. Lead and guide me in every step I take. In Jesus’ name, amen!
