Scripture

(John 10:7-10, NLT) 7 so he explained it to them: “I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All who came before me were thieves and robbers. But the true sheep did not listen to them. 9 Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures. 10 The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.

Observation

  • Jesus is explaining what he meant to the people confused by his illustration concerning the gate, the shepherd, and the thief.

  • Jesus identifies himself as not only the shepherd but also as the gate. As the gate, if people come in through him, they will be saved. They will have freedom of movement and find good pasture. His goal is to bring salvation and a rich and satisfying life.

  • The thief’s purpose is opposite of Jesus. He desires to steal and kill and destroy.

  • People who try to enter into salvation without going through the gate are thieves and robbers.

Application

  • Salvation comes by going directly through the gate (Jesus).

  • We experience a rich and satisfying life with Jesus.

  • Only death and destruction come from the thief.

Prayer

Dear Lord, you are the Gate. It is only in you that we find salvation. As I live within the boundaries you have created, help me to experience the freedom that only you can provide. I choose life today. I desire to experience the rich and satisfying life that only Jesus can provide. Protect me from the thief who is always trying to kill, steal, and destroy. In Jesus name, amen!
