Scripture

(John 9:35-41, NLT) 35 When Jesus heard what had happened, he found the man and asked, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” 36 The man answered, “Who is he, sir? I want to believe in him.” 37 “You have seen him,” Jesus said, “and he is speaking to you!” 38 “Yes, Lord, I believe!” the man said. And he worshiped Jesus. 39 Then Jesus told him, “I entered this world to render judgment—to give sight to the blind and to show those who think they see that they are blind.” 40 Some Pharisees who were standing nearby heard him and asked, “Are you saying we’re blind?” 41 “If you were blind, you wouldn’t be guilty,” Jesus replied. “But you remain guilty because you claim you can see.

Observation

  • As this account comes to an end, Jesus comes back because he heard what was happening and found the man he had healed.

  • The former blind man, who earlier in the story had already confessed that Jesus was at least a prophet, is now invited (by Jesus) to really see. His physical healing has now positioned him for the real healing.

  • The man finally sees the truth and believes that Jesus is the Christ, the son of God. The phrase, Son of Man is used in these verses.

  • The man worships Jesus because of his newfound belief.

  • Jesus explains his mission: (1) to render judgement, (2) to give sight to the blind, and (3) to show those who think they see that they are blind.

  • The Pharisees overhear Jesus, and he tells them that they are guilty because they think they see. Jesus is basically telling them that they are blind to what God is doing.

Application

  • If I am blind, Jesus can help me see.

  • If I think I know, Jesus can help me really know.

  • I believe you are the Son of Man, and I will worship you.

Prayer

Dear Lord, you are the Christ, the Son of the Living God. You have the power to heal my blindness both physically and spiritually. Help me to see clearly all the things you want me to see. If there is any part of my vision that is blocked or clouded, please, remove those barriers so that I can see clearly today.
