Scripture

(John 21:7-14, NLT) 7 Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, “It’s the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his tunic (for he had stripped for work), jumped into the water, and headed to shore. 8 The others stayed with the boat and pulled the loaded net to the shore, for they were only about a hundred yards from shore. 9 When they got there, they found breakfast waiting for them—fish cooking over a charcoal fire, and some bread. 10 “Bring some of the fish you’ve just caught,” Jesus said. 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net to the shore. There were 153 large fish, and yet the net hadn’t torn. 12 “Now come and have some breakfast!” Jesus said. None of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Then Jesus served them the bread and the fish. 14 This was the third time Jesus had appeared to his disciples since he had been raised from the dead.

Observation

  • Peter jumped in the water and swam to shore to see Jesus.

  • The other disciples stayed with the boat and pulled the catch to shore.

  • Jesus had breakfast waiting for them. He had cooked some fish over a charcoal fire and some bread. Notice the word “charcoal” again.

  • Where did Jesus get the fish he cooked?

  • I notice the very specific number (153) of large fish.

  • John makes sure the reader remembers that this was the third time Jesus had appeared to his disciples after his resurrection.

Application

  • Peter didn’t hesitate to jump in the water and start swimming towards Jesus on the shore. I desire to be a person who jumps in faith toward Jesus.

  • Jesus connects a new memory with the charcoal fire. This memory is a good memory filled with restoration, not denial. Jesus can always redeem my bad decisions.

Prayer

God, you are so gracious and kind to us. You always forgive and restore us. Thank you for loving us even when we reject you with our actions. Help me to follow you even when it is hard or costs me something. I pray you will give me the courage to jump out of the boat to follow you. I want to live with full faith and trust in you. Increase my faith anywhere I have doubt. In Jesus' name, amen!
