Scripture
(John 21:15-17, NLT) 15 After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.” “Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him. 16 Jesus repeated the question: “Simon son of John, do you love me?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I love you.” “Then take care of my sheep,” Jesus said. 17 A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep.
Observation
Jesus asks Peter three different times if he loves Jesus.
Peter answers all three times in the affirmative by saying, “You know I love you.”
Jesus commands Peter to “feed my lambs,” “take care of my sheep," and “feed my sheep.”
John tells us that Peter was hurt because Jesus kept asking him the same question. The three questions seem to go hand in hand with the three denials.
Peter states that Jesus knows everything and confidently states that he loves Jesus.
Application
Peter is grief-stricken over his denial. He is overwhelmed with joy to see Jesus on the beach, so he jumps in faith out of the boat to be with Jesus. Jesus doesn’t just cook him a meal, he restores him back to fellowship. Jesus is our redeemer and friend.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, For the times in my life that I have not loved you with my whole heart, please, forgive me. I confess that oftentimes I fall short of the glory of God and need help. Thank you for helping me while I was a sinner. You died for me! You came to restore me back to the Father! I now live as a new creation in your Kingdom. Help me each and every day to fully embrace the power of the Holy Spirit and live in the victory given by Jesus. Hallelujah! In Jesus' name, amen!
