Daily S.O.A.P. Prompts

Scripture

(John 21:1-6, NLT) Later, Jesus appeared again to the disciples beside the Sea of Galilee. This is how it happened. 2 Several of the disciples were there—Simon Peter, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples. 3 Simon Peter said, “I’m going fishing.” “We’ll come, too,” they all said. So they went out in the boat, but they caught nothing all night. 4 At dawn Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn’t see who he was. 5 He called out, “Fellows, have you caught any fish?” “No,” they replied. 6 Then he said, “Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you’ll get some!” So they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it.

Observation

  • I notice that there were at least seven disciples on the beach that day. All are named except the “two other disciples.”

  • Peter decides to go fishing, and the others come along.

  • They fished all night but didn’t catch anything.

  • Jesus tells them to throw their nets on the right side of the boat, and they do.

  • The number of fish in their nets is so massive that they can’t haul it in.

Application

  • Peter returns to what he knows. This can be a great strategy when you don’t know what to do. Jesus met them there.

  • Fishing requires different strategies and constant change to be effective. Changing the strategy leads to a large catch.

  • Listening to Jesus’ instructions is key.

Prayer

Dear Lord, you are so faithful to us. When we don’t know what to do, you always show the way. You call all of us to go fishing for people. Help us know what lures us so we can be most effective. I commit to listening to your instructions so I can see a catch so big that I can’t bring it in without help. May many come to know you through my daily obedience to fish. May heaven be populated today. In Jesus' name, amen.
