Scripture

John 2: 18-22 (LEB) 18 So the Jews answered and said to him, “What sign do you show to us, because you are doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up!” 20 Then the Jews said, “This temple has been under construction forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?” 21 But he was speaking about the temple of his body. 22 So when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the scripture and the saying that Jesus had spoken.

Observation

• I notice that after Jesus cleansed the Temple, the Jews asked a question about what gives Jesus the authority to do what he did.

• Jesus tells them that if they destroy the “temple” (which represents his body) it will be “raised” up in three days. Jesus was referring to the resurrection.

• The Jews thought he was literally referring to the Temple structure that took “forty-six years to build.

• John explains that as the disciples reflected on what transpired and remembered this interaction between Jesus and the Jews. They remembered that Jesus said if he was “destroyed” that in “three days” it would be re-built.

• As a result of this remembering, we are told that they “believed” the scripture and what Jesus said.

Application

• Jesus was destroyed by these religious leaders, but He was raised from the destruction in three days. The resurrection of Jesus means I can be saved and restored back to God.

Prayer

Dear Lord, thank you for being “destroyed” for me. Your resurrection has brought me and others life. In 3 days, you were raised from death and destruction. This sign or miracle brought life to my world. Thank you for loving me and giving your life for me. In Jesus’ name, amen!
