Dependence on Jesus

Daily S.O.A.P. Prompts

S – What verse stands out to me today?

O – What is God revealing about Jesus?

A – How should this change my life today?

P – What is my prayer in response?

Scripture

(John 13:36-38, NLT) 36 Simon Peter asked, “Lord, where are you going?” And Jesus replied, “You can’t go with me now, but you will follow me later.” 37 “But why can’t I come now, Lord?” he asked. “I’m ready to die for you.” 38 Jesus answered, “Die for me? I tell you the truth, Peter—before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.

Observation

  • Jesus is clearly talking about his ascension to be with the Father in heaven. Peter can’t go now but eventually will be able to go after his death.

  • Peter is eager to go with Jesus even if it means his own death.

  • Jesus explains to Peter that “before the rooster crows tomorrow morning," he will deny Jesus three different times.

Application

  • Peter is eventually killed for being a follower of Jesus and does go to be with Jesus in heaven. Before any of that happens, Peter denies Jesus three times and is restored by Jesus for his failure.

  • Eagerness and impulsivity can be cousins. Peter learned the hard way, but he eventually learned. I see myself in Peter sometimes. I don’t always count the cost before I jump.

Prayer

Oh Lord, forgive me for the times that I have made things harder on myself because I jumped before I counted. I want to be eager to follow. I always want to live with speedy obedience. Help me to hear your voice clearly so that I can follow quickly. Keep me from impulsive actions that create problems. I desire to live full of faith. Help me to honor that desire. In Jesus' name, amen!
