Scripture

John 2:6-11 (LEB) Now six stone water jars were set there, in accordance with the ceremonial cleansing of the Jews, each holding two or three measures. Jesus said to them, “Fill the water jars with water.” And they filled them to the brim. And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the head steward. So they took itNow when the head steward tasted the water which had become wine and did not know where it was from—but the servants who had drawn the water knew—the head steward summoned the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “⌊Everyone⌋serves the good wine first, and whenever they are drunk, the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!” 11 This beginning of signs Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee, and revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him.

Observation

• I notice that there are 6 stone water jars used for ceremonial washing. Each jar held somewhere between 150-180 gallons of water.

• The servants did exactly what Jesus told them to do just like Mary had instructed. The result was miraculous.

• The steward is not sure what to make of the situation, because usually the host brings out the good wine first and the cheaper stuff later.

• The more drunk people get, the less they care about quality.

• We are specifically told that turning water into wine at this wedding in Cana of Galilee is “the beginning of signs Jesus performed.”

• The sign itself, according to John, “revealed his [Jesus] glory, and his disciples believed in him.”

Application

• If Jesus can turn water into wine, then He can do anything. I believe it. In the things that seem too big today, Lord, I believe.

Prayer

Dear Jesus, nothing is too big for you. You can turn water into wine. This means you have the power over creation. If you have power and authority over creation, then you can solve any problem I face today. I am truly grateful for this truth! Help me to live it out when challenges come my way. Amen!
