Scripture

John 2:1-5 (LEB) And on the third day, there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. And both Jesus and his disciples were invited to the wedding. And when the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine!” And Jesus said to her, “What ⌊does your concern have to do with me⌋, woman? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Whatever he says to you, do it!”

Observation

• This section of scripture is a part of a larger story in John. The wedding at Cana in Galilee is the first “sign” that John’s gospel shares with his reader.

• John is telling us that this is two days after the invitation to the disciples to come and see. “On the third day…”

• The phrase, “The mother of Jesus” is used two different times. Mary’s actual name isn’t used in John’s gospel.

• They have run out of wine at the wedding. It was the responsibility of the host to provide wine the entire time. Usually, weddings lasted 7 days in the Jewish world at this time.

• I notice Jesus doesn’t think it is his responsibility to address the wine shortage, but Mary does. She knows he can solve the problem.

• It seems that Mary doesn’t take Jesus’ comments to mean He isn’t going to do anything about the wine shortage, because she tells the “servants” to do whatever He tells them to do.

Application

• Whatever the shortage in my life, Jesus can make up the difference.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I am so thankful that when I am short, You are more than able to make up the difference. When I am weak, You are strong. Thank you for being my provider! In Jesus’ name, Amen!
