Scripture
(John 9:1-7, NLT) As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth. 2 “Rabbi,” his disciples asked him, “why was this man born blind? Was it because of his own sins or his parents’ sins?” 3 “It was not because of his sins or his parents’ sins,” Jesus answered. “This happened so the power of God could be seen in him. 4 We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us. The night is coming, and then no one can work. 5 But while I am here in the world, I am the light of the world.” 6 Then he spit on the ground, made mud with the saliva, and spread the mud over the blind man’s eyes. 7 He told him, “Go wash yourself in the pool of Siloam” (Siloam means “sent”). So the man went and washed and came back seeing! 8 His neighbors and others who knew him as a blind beggar asked each other, “Isn’t this the man who used to sit and beg?” 9 Some said he was, and others said, “No, he just looks like him!” But the beggar kept saying, “Yes, I am the same one!”
Observation
• A series of questions is asked. (1) Why was this man born blind? (2) Was it because of his own sin or his parents’ sin? (3) Isn’t this the man who used to sit and beg?
• It is suggested that the man is blind because of his sin or his parents’ sin. Jesus rejects this line of thinking.
• The man was born blind so that the power of God could be seen in him.
• Jesus expresses urgency around the purposed tasks of God. We must act quickly because night is coming. Once again Jesus uses the phrase, “I am the light of the world.”
• Jesus spits on the ground and makes mud using his saliva. After spreading this mud on the eyes of the blind man, he tells him to wash in the pool of Siloam.
• The blind man is healed. People are divided on this miracle. Some believe it is him, and others do not.
• The bling beggar confirms that it is in fact him.
Application
• The conclusions we come to about people aren’t always true.
• Sickness isn’t always attached to what we do or what others have done.
• Jesus brings light, life, and healing to my life.
Prayer
Dear God, thank you for sending your Son to illuminate my life. The healing rays of Jesus drive out all darkness and sickness. In Jesus’ name, amen!
