Scripture

John 1:6-13 (LEB) “A man came, sent from God, ⌊whose name was⌋ John. This one came for a witness, in order that he could testify about the light, so that all would believe through him. That one was not the light, but came in order that he could testify about the lightThe true light, who gives light to every person, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world came into being through him, and the world did not recognize him11 He came to his own things, and his own people did not receive him12 But as many as received him—to those who believe in his name—he gave to them authority to become children of God13 who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of a husband, but of God.”

Observation

• I notice a repetitions of terms in these few verses: “light” is mentioned 4 times (also, 2 other times in verse 5), “believe” is mentioned 2 times, and “testify” is mentioned 2 times as welland if you include “witness” you could say 3 similar terms are used.

• I notice that John (the Baptist) was the witness who would be testifying about Jesus and very specifically that he is NOT the light.

• The light is given and available to “every person” who are willing to “believe.”

• Again, Jesus is the light who was coming into the world.

• I notice another reference to his divine personhood when John writes, “and the world came into being through him…"

• I also notice a repetition of a phrase in verse 11. Clearly, John is stressing to the reader that world did not do something. First, they didn’t “recognize” him. Second, the world didn’t “receive” him.

• I notice the contrast (“but”) used at the beginning of verse 12. If someone would receive him, and believe in him, then they would be given “authority” to become “children of God.”

Application

• Like John, we are called to testify to the Light. I am called to be a witness to the world around me. Telling everyone I can that Jesus is the Light and that if they believe in Him, they can have eternal life through Him.

• I am so glad that I have recognized, received, and believed in Jesus. I can truly say, “I am a child of God!”

Prayer

Jesus, Light of the World, Maker of all things, thank you for seeking and finding me. Without You, I would be lost and in the darkness. Because of You, I am found and in the light. Help me to testify about You to all the people I meet today. Help me to share the good news that they can also choose to recognize, receive, and believe in You. May I live like a child of God so that more people want to become children of God through Jesus, the Light. Amen!
