Scripture

John 1:1-5 (LEB) 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. This one was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and apart from him not one thing came into being that has come into being. In him was life, and the life was the light of humanity. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

Observation

• I notice that John starts his gospel with the phrase “In the beginning” which is exactly how Genesis 1 begins. “In the beginning was the word” and “In the beginning God created.”

• The “Word” represents Jesus.

• The “Word” (Jesus) was with God at creation.

• Jesus (the Word) made all things, and nothing came into being without him.

• Through Jesus life and light came to us.

• Jesus (the Word) is presented as the light in the darkness. And best of all the darkness cannot “overcome” the light.

Application

The divinity of Jesus is on full display. Jesus has the authority to impact my life. All darkness in my life must flee. The light (Jesus) has overcome the darkness in my life.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I give you praise that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. He is the creator of all things (including me). This means you have the power to address my darkness. Jesus, Light of the World, shine on me. Extinguish all darkness in me. Overcome all darkness in me. Address all darkness (known or unknown) in me. Thank you for loving me and helping me! In Jesus name, Amen!
