Scripture
(John 18:19-27, NLT) 19 Inside, the high priest began asking Jesus about his followers and what he had been teaching them. 20 Jesus replied, “Everyone knows what I teach. I have preached regularly in the synagogues and the Temple, where the people gather. I have not spoken in secret. 21 Why are you asking me this question? Ask those who heard me. They know what I said.” 22 Then one of the Temple guards standing nearby slapped Jesus across the face. “Is that the way to answer the high priest?” he demanded. 23 Jesus replied, “If I said anything wrong, you must prove it. But if I’m speaking the truth, why are you beating me?” 24 Then Annas bound Jesus and sent him to Caiaphas, the high priest. 25 Meanwhile, as Simon Peter was standing by the fire warming himself, they asked him again, “You’re not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it, saying, “No, I am not.” 26 But one of the household slaves of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Didn’t I see you out there in the olive grove with Jesus?” 27 Again Peter denied it. And immediately a rooster crowed.
Observation
Jesus is interrogated by the high priest about what he has been teaching.
Jesus asks, “Why are you asking me this question?” He knew that wasn’t the question they really wanted to ask him.
Jesus was slapped across the face by one of the Temple guards for being disrespectful. Jesus invites the guard to prove what he said was wrong or disrespectful.
Anna binds Jesus and send him to Caiaphas.
Peter is warming himself outside and is asked two more times if he knows Jesus, and both times he denies knowing him. This fulfills what Jesus said Peter would do.
John adds some detail about a household slave being a relative of Malchus. This relationship leads to Peter being exposed as one of Jesus’ disciples. He still denies it.
Application
Things we do in private can make their way public.
Prayer
Dear Lord, you know all things. Nothing is hidden from you. Peter was violent toward Malchus in the olive grove, but his violence was exposed in the temple courtyard. Help me to be the same in private that I am in public. I want to have complete integrity in all that I say and do. I know I fall short in this, but I also know you can help me. Give me to power to overcome the things that cause duplicity in my life. May I live full integrated and whole before a broken world, so that more people will come to know you. In Jesus name, amen.
