Scripture

(John 15:9-17, NLT) 9 “I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. 10 When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. 11 I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! 12 This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. 13 There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me. 16 You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. 17 This is my command: Love each other.

Observation

  • I notice a lot of repetition of terms. The words: love, remain (or abide), joy, commandment or command, friend, and slave.

  • As we remain in God’s love, we will be able to love like God. Jesus is the example of that love. He commands us to love each other in the same way He has loved us.

  • Jesus has told us these things so that our joy will overflow in Him.

  • We are Jesus’ friends if we do what He commanded us to do.

  • There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

  • Jesus calls His disciples friends, not slaves.

  • Jesus chose His disciples.

  • Our purpose is to produce lasting fruit.

Application

  • It is impossible to produce fruit disconnected from the vine.

  • Remaining in the love is the only way to love each other in the way that Jesus loved.

  • Joy comes to those who remain.

  • Ask whatever you want in Jesus’ name.

Prayer

Loving Father, mighty God, be exalted in my life. You are the source of life, love, and joy. As I remain in you, let my life be an example of your love. May I be filled with joy overflowing. May I love like Jesus loved. May I sacrifice life like Jesus sacrificed. Help me today to love those I encounter with the love of Christ. I recognize that it is your desire for me to obey your commandments, remain in your love, and produce lasting fruit. I ask, in your name, for the ability to produce in this way for your kingdom. In Jesus' name, amen!
