Scripture
(John 14:28-31, NLT) 28 Remember what I told you: I am going away, but I will come back to you again. If you really loved me, you would be happy that I am going to the Father, who is greater than I am. 29 I have told you these things before they happen so that when they do happen, you will believe. 30 “I don’t have much more time to talk to you, because the ruler of this world approaches. He has no power over me, 31 but I will do what the Father requires of me, so that the world will know that I love the Father. Come, let’s be going.
Observation
The time has come for Jesus to be glorified. Jesus explains that there is very little time left before the reason for his coming is fully realized.
Jesus is helping his disciples understand that him leaving is a good thing for the world, but he will return. This is a foreshadowing to the Second Coming of Jesus. The full gospel is the birth, life, death, resurrection, and second coming.
The phrase “I have told you” so that you will believe is used many different times in John. Once Jesus returns to the Father, Jesus expects them to remember all that he has done and believe.
Application
I am so glad Jesus is coming back to make everything right again. This makes me happy and expectant.
Jesus going to the Father is for our good. We receive the gift of the Holy Spirit and the hope of his final return.
Prayer
Dear Lord, I dream of the day of being reunited with you. I can’t wait to see your final return. It will be a glorious day. My hope is high not because everything is good in my life, but because you are good. My hope is high because you are always true to your words. My hope is high because you always fulfill the promises you make. My hope is in you and not this world. Help me never to so earthly focused that I forget my eternal future. I receive the joy, peace, and hope of knowing you. In Jesus name, amen!
