Scripture
(John 14:15-21, NLT) 15 “If you love me, obey my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. 17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. 18 No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you. 19 Soon the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Since I live, you also will live. 20 When I am raised to life again, you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.”
Observation
There is much trinitarian language in these verses. The Advocate, or Holy Spirit, is introduced by Jesus. So now, there is the Son, the Father, and the Holy Spirit. Jesus explains that the Holy Spirit will never leave us, and He will lead us in all truth.
The Holy Spirit only comes to those who are looking for Him.
The Advocate will never abandon us as orphans.
Jesus leaving ushers in the Holy Spirit coming to us.
If we love Jesus, we will obey the commandments of Jesus. Our obedience is a sign of our love for Him.
Jesus promises to reveal himself to us if we believe and obey.
Application
God will never leave or abandon me.
The Holy Spirit is my Advocate and will reveal all truth to me.
If I look for the Holy Spirit, then I will find Him.
Faithful obedience is God’s love language.
Prayer
Dear Father, thank you for sending your Son to save me. Also, thank you for sending the Holy Spirit to be my Advocate and Teacher. It is clear to me that you have thought of all that I will need to journey with you this side of Heaven. I receive all of these gifts from You and promise to use them to the best of my ability. Thank you for not abandoning me and never giving up on me. I choose to walk in faithful obedience towards all of your commandments. Empower me and help me to remain faithful to this desire. In Jesus' name, amen!
