Scripture
(John 11:28-37, NLT) 28 Then she returned to Mary. She called Mary aside from the mourners and told her, “The Teacher is here and wants to see you.” 29 So Mary immediately went to him. 30 Jesus had stayed outside the village, at the place where Martha met him. 31 When the people who were at the house consoling Mary saw her leave so hastily, they assumed she was going to Lazarus’s grave to weep. So they followed her there. 32 When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within him, and he was deeply troubled. 34 “Where have you put him?” he asked them. They told him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Then Jesus wept. 36 The people who were standing nearby said, “See how much he loved him!” 37 But some said, “This man healed a blind man. Couldn’t he have kept Lazarus from dying?”
Observation
Martha refers to Jesus as the Teacher. I think that is the first time that name is used in John.
Mary immediately went to meet Jesus and said the same thing Martha said, “if only you had been here…”
Curiously, Jesus sees the weeping and wailing and is filled with a deep anger. He is deeply troubled. Why? (Jesus is angry at death and the pain it causes his people. A problem he will soon address).
Jesus is so grieved by the situation John tells us Jesus wept. The crow assumes it is because he loved Lazarus so much.
The crowd also comments that if Jesus can heal blind people, then he should have been able to heal Lazarus.
Application
Jesus is the best teacher.
Jesus was upset by the pain and suffering caused by death. He was moved with compassion for us.
If Jesus did it once, he can do it again.
Prayer
Dear Lord, you are more than able. If you did it once, you can do it again. Matter of fact, if you haven’t done it, then you can still do it. I pray for all the people in my life, family, and church who are suffering with sickness, sin, and impending death. I know it hurts your heart that your kids suffer. I believe you can heal and will heal. Release healing in the lives of people right now. In Jesus’ name, amen!
