Scripture

(John 8:21-30, NLT) 21 Later Jesus said to them again, “I am going away. You will search for me but will die in your sin. You cannot come where I am going.” 22 The people asked, “Is he planning to commit suicide? What does he mean, ‘You cannot come where I am going’?” 23 Jesus continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You belong to this world; I do not. 24 That is why I said that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I Am who I claim to be, you will die in your sins.” 25 “Who are you?” they demanded. Jesus replied, “The one I have always claimed to be. 26 I have much to say about you and much to condemn, but I won’t. For I say only what I have heard from the one who sent me, and he is completely truthful.” 27 But they still didn’t understand that he was talking about his Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man on the cross, then you will understand that I Am he. I do nothing on my own but say only what the Father taught me. 29 And the one who sent me is with me—he has not deserted me. For I always do what pleases him.” 30 Then many who heard him say these things believed in him.

Observation

• Jesus continues the conversation with the Pharisees and the crowd.

• Jesus explains that they will die in their sin unless they believe in him. The I AM.

• There is more contrast. Jesus is from above, and they are from below. Jesus is going away and they are staying.

• Jesus continues to only say and do what his “time” allows. He refuses to give any information to the people unless it is the right time or he has heard his Father say it.

• Jesus tells the people that his Father is always truthful.

• Jesus is foreshadowing his death on the cross. He hasn’t even been arrested or condemned to die, but he is fully aware that it is coming. He uses the terms “Son of Man” and “I AM” in connection with the cross.

• He stresses that his Father has not “deserted” him.

• The term “believe” is used again. We are told that many who heard him say these things believed in him.

Application

• Salvation comes through the sacrifice of Jesus.

• God will never leave us or forsake us.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you are the Son of Man and the great I AM. Because of your sacrifice on the cross I have salvation. I can go where you are going. I can spend eternity with you. Thank you for providing the way for this to occur. You never leave me or forsake me. You are always right by my side. I chose to truth you with my life. Show me the path that leads to righteousness. Help me to walk in it. In Jesus name, amen!
