Scripture

(John 7:37-39, NLT) 37 On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! 38 Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’39 (When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.)

Observation

  • There must have been a lot of people there for Jesus to have to shout.

  • I think this is the third time that Jesus has used the phrase “living water,” and if people come to Him, they will find life.

  • John explains the meaning behind what Jesus is saying and connects it to the Spirit.

  • John makes a point of specifically telling us about the timing of the coming of the Spirit being after the crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension, but using the term “glory.”

Application

  • When the crowd is too noisy, sometimes you have to shout.

  • Jesus can quench my thirst if I come to Him.

  • I need the Spirit to never thirst again.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You are the source of all my satisfaction. Fill me with Your Spirit so that I might be satisfied. When the crowd gets noisy in my life, when the voices get loud, will You shout so that I might hear You? In Jesus’ name, Amen.
