Scripture

(John 6:36-51, LEB) 36 But I said to you that you have seen me and do not believe37 Everyone whom the Father gives to me will come to me, and the one who comes to me I will never throw out38 because I have come down from heaven not that I should do my will, but the will of the one who sent me. 39 Now this is the will of the one who sent me: that everyone whom he has given me, I would not lose any of them, but raise them up on the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks at the Son and believes in him would have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.” 41 Now the Jews began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven,” 42 and they were saying, “Is this one not Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” 43 Jesus answered and said to them, “Do not grumble ⌊among yourselves⌋! 44 No one is able to come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written in the prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who hears from the Father and learns comes to me. 46 (Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God—this one has seen the Father.) 47 Truly, truly I say to you, the one who believes has eternal life48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and they died. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven so that someone may eat from it and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats from this bread, he will live ⌊forever⌋. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

Observation

• Jesus, again, confronts their sign-seeking behavior. He accuses them of seeing him and not believing. Jesus has already done various signs, and they still don’t believe.

• The Father determines the “one[s] who come to [Jesus]. There is a lot of “will” language throughout these verses. God’s will and the will of the person.

• The term “believe” is mentioned another 3 times.

• I notice the phrases “I am the bread of life” and “I am the living bread” in the last few verses. The idea of Jesus being the bread that satisfies is being reinforced by John.

• Jesus states that he “will not lose any of them” that the Father gives him. I find this encouraging.

• Jesus mixes metaphors again. He goes from bread to flesh. He clearly connects his body (flesh) with the bread. If we eat it, his flesh so to speak, we will receive eternal life. This imagery is similar to the communion language that we see in other gospels. Eat my flesh; drink my blood. Body broken; blood spilled.

Application

• My eternity is secure in Jesus.

Prayer

Father God, you are sovereign and you draw all people to yourself. Thank you for drawing me to Jesus. My life was a mess before I met your Son. Your kindness and grace lead me to repentance. I am totally dependent on you for salvation and provision. Thank you for holding me in your hands. You never let go! My eternity is secure in Jesus! Amen.
