Scripture

John 5:10-16 (LEB) 10 So the Jews were saying to the one who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not permitted for you to pick up the mat!” 11 But he answered them, “The one who made me well—that one said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk!’ ” 12 So they asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Pick up your mat and walk?’ ” 13 But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn while a crowd was in the place. 14 After these things Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “Look, you have become well! Sin no longer, lest something worse happen to you.” 15 The man went and reported to the Jews that Jesus was the one who made him well16 And on account of this the Jews began to persecute Jesus because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.

Observation

• A few key players: the Jews, the healed man, Jesus, and the crowd.

• John reminds us it is the Sabbath. Interestingly, the Jews focus on the picking up of the mat and carrying it, rather than the healing itself.

• The man didn’t know the name of Jesus. Jesus withdrew from the crowd of people. He later appears in the temple, where he interacts with the man who was healed.

• Jesus tells the man who was healed, “Sin no longer, lest something worse happen to you.” Naturally, this brings a variety of questions related to this man’s healings. Did his sickness come because of sinning? What worse could happen to him?

• The word "persecute" is used towards Jesus for his willingness to heal people on the Sabbath.

Application

• Sin no longer, lest something worse happen to you.

Prayer

God, you are my banner of victory. I can overcome sin in my life because you give me the power. Sin remains but no longer reigns. Help me each day to stand in victory over my flesh and sinful desires. Fill me with your Holy Spirit and power! In Jesus’ name! Amen!
