Scripture

John 4:1-15 (LEB) Now when Jesus knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John (although Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples), he left Judea and departed again for Galilee. And it was necessary for him to go through SamariaNow he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the piece of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. And Jacob’s well was there, so Jesus, because he had become tired from the journey, simply sat down at the well. It was about the sixth hour

woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me water to drink.” (For his disciples had gone away into the town so that they could buy food.) So the Samaritanwoman said to him, “How do you, being a Jew, ask from me water to drink, since I am a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you had known the gift of God and who it is who says to you, ‘Give me water to drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have no bucket and the well is deep! From where then do you get this living water12 You are not greater than our father Jacob, are you, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, and his sons and his livestock?” 13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again. 14 But whoever drinks of this waterwhich I will give to him will never be thirsty for eternity, but the water which I will give to him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or come here to draw water!”

Observation

• I notice that Jesus leaves where he was because the Pharisees were getting more upset with his baptizing and discipleship making.

• It is clear from the text that Jesus found “it necessary” to go through Samaria. This would have been a very intentional move on the behalf of Jesus. Jews tended to avoid this area because of the historic hostilities between these two peoples.

• Three terms I notice that bring some insight into these verses: Woman, Samaritan, and water.

• I notice that this woman came to the well “about the sixth hour” which means she was trying to avoid seeing other people at the well.

• I notice that there is this interaction between Jesus (a man, Rabbi, Jew) and this woman (Samaritan). It would have been considered inappropriate for Jesus to have this conversation because she was a woman (they were alone) and because she was a Samaritan.

• The term “water” is used eleven times. Water takes center stage in these verses. Jesus contrasts the regular water you get from this ancient well and the living water that he brings to the world.

• The woman wants the living water that Jesus brings but is failing to understand what it is that He is offering her. Jesus is offering eternal life, and she is thinking this living water will keep her from having to draw water ever again from this well.

Application

• I want to be the type of person (like Jesus) who goes out of my way to reach people with the gospel who are considered “untouchables” in this world.

Prayer

Dear Lord, my Living Water, saturate my life with your presence today. May I be sensitive to your presence today. Give me the opportunity to share the living water with those who are thirsty. Help me to go out of my way to share this eternal message. In Jesus’ name, amen!
