Scripture
(John 19:8-16, NLT) 8 When Pilate heard this, he was more frightened than ever. 9 He took Jesus back into the headquarters again and asked him, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave no answer. 10 “Why don’t you talk to me?” Pilate demanded. “Don’t you realize that I have the power to release you or crucify you?” 11 Then Jesus said, “You would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above. So the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.” 12 Then Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish leaders shouted, “If you release this man, you are no ‘friend of Caesar. ’Anyone who declares himself a king is a rebel against Caesar.” 13 When they said this, Pilate brought Jesus out to them again. Then Pilate sat down on the judgment seat on the platform that is called the Stone Pavement (in Hebrew, Gabbatha). 14 It was now about noon on the day of preparation for the Passover. And Pilate said to the people, “Look, here is your king!” 15 “Away with him,” they yelled. “Away with him! Crucify him!”
Observation
I find it interesting that the NLT includes this interpretive phrase, “he was more frightened than ever…” to describe Pilate’s emotions.
I notice Jesus only answers the questions he wants to answer. He states again that Pilate’s power over Jesus is given only by God. God is the origin of Pilate’s power.
John mentions Judas again in this text. He is referred to as the one “who has the greater sin.”
The Jewish leaders don’t want Pilate to release Jesus. They double down on their desire to kill Jesus by telling Pilate that there is only one king, and that is Caesar. They want Pilate to kill him because he has claimed to be king, which stands in direct opposition to Rome.
Pilate turns Jesus over to be crucified.
Application
God gives power, and God is in control.
Doing the right thing is not always easy and can be opposite of the group.
Jesus is willing to go through this for me.
Prayer
Dear Lord, you know all. Help me to know when the crowd is wrong so I can stand for what is right. In Jesus' name, amen.
